Getting to know Mark

For over a decade, the counseling room has been a space Mark has used to help bring hope, direction, and restoration to those experiencing hardship and those who are looking to get on the right track. As a licensed marriage and family therapist, this has taken a variety of forms, from working with individual adults, teens, couples, and families, to leading groups, coaching, and teaching. Outside of formal counseling settings, this includes leading recovery groups at his church, one-on-one mentorship and discipleship, and serving in the elementary ministry. At the heart of it all is the recognition that our greatest need is Christ, and Mark desires for others to get to know Him and see His work in everything. The counseling room has been a special place to witness how the realities of Scripture play out in everyday struggles as well as the deepest joys and pains.

Style & Approach

Mark’s counseling background includes training and experience with various therapeutic approaches, with emphasis in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Attachment Theory. Just as he seeks to support people in seeing the realities of their lives through the lens of Scripture, he applies that lens to each of the clinical theories he draws upon. The aim is a gospel-centered approach that utilizes traditional theory and technique without compromising what is revealed in Scripture. He works with teens, adults, couples, and families to help them navigate various life stressors, including relationship distress, couples/marriage conflict, anxiety, depression, fear of others’ perceptions/judgment, pride, anger, and shame.

Much of the time, Mark’s approach looks basically similar to the fundamentals of other counseling approaches: listening without judgment, offering compassion and encouragement, holding space for pain and longing, building trust and awareness, working toward change, and celebrating the wins. What makes this approach perhaps stand out is the kind of change emphasized and the direction that it travels. It is heart-focused change that is oriented toward Christ. This often includes helping people see the sources they go to for meaning, comfort, and safety, discover what they are really after (what their hearts are seeking), and re-orient wherever necessary. It takes into account that all of life is lived before God. So whether clients are coming to navigate difficult relationships (even their relationship with God), alleviate personal suffering, change patterns, or otherwise persevere through chronic difficulties, Mark seeks to help them connect with a sure and steadfast hope that is central to the process of heart-level change.
